iune 16.—The action of the American
lovernment, towards the'Fenians, in the
ii. ¿ r
s, and is
The London Times to-day eulogises the
Washington llovernment, and sajs it
would be impossible to exaggerate the
good faith, the friendliness, the sincerity
regard for mütnal obligations
which have promted these energetic and
decisive measures.
The American Government has acted
in a manner which even exceeds any-
thing that could honorably have been
expected fromjtha most friendly n&tion.
The article expresses the ¿¡-ratification
that such distinguished officers as Gens,
Grant and Meade should have been sent
to the scene, and says these energetic
acts of genuine friendship will be long
and cordially remembered. The Feni-
ans aro all almost entitled to thanks for
haying given the Americans an occasion
into between the two countries at the
time of the marriage of the Prince of
Wales with Alexandra, daughter, of the
reigning King of Denmark, whom Great
Britain had helped to place on the throne.
Lord John Russell threatened vengeance
if Denmark should be attacked, and call-
ed a conference of powers, which Prussia
refused to attend. The conference end-
rta-in,fby
Austria, forced Denmark Hb yield not
only Sehleswig and Holstein but Lauen-
berg^soto her demand . At Vienna,
in the month of August, 1864, the ple-
nipotentiaries of Denmark, Austria and
Prussia signed fh agreement , in the first
paragraph of W*iieh "His %ajesty the
King of Denmark renounces all his rights
to the. Duchies of Sehleswig, Holstein
and Lauonberg in favor of their Majes-
ties the King of Prussia and the Enaper-
or,of Austria, engaging to recqgnize the
arrangements their said Majesties shall
make in respect of those Duchies,''
These arrangements were the purchase
by Prussia of the Austrian interest in
Liuenberg for two millions of dollars,
and joint proprietorship of Sehleswig
Holstein, whioh led to a quarrel and to
a treaty according Austria the right to
hold Holstein and Prussia the control of
StJhleswig. Soon afterwards, however,
Prussia took advantage of some pretext
to order her al{y out of Holstein They
divided as long as possible, and when the
division of the spoil camo to an end, the
serious difficulty commenced. Austria
refused to obey the command to quit;
and either she made an alleged distur-
bance in Bohemia the pretext for begin-
ning to arm, or Count Rismark, of Prus-
sia, made Austria's necessity the ground
of such an accusation and an excuse for
beginning to place Prussia on a war foot-
ing and .for. opening negotiations with
SHL2
ber military preparations, and that in
turn induced Prussia to enlarge her war-
like arrangements; and so, as usual,.one
thing has brought on another until
Europe is threatened with A general and
bloody war.
