Augusta, Texas, July 16, 18^5.
I have been in this sectipn of Housm
county for several days, and "have had a flhftL
opport«nity for observing the feelings pf the
people in the country. I find the people,
with few exception^, cfyeerftil, or at least
seemingly sp, and disposed to make the best
of the situation. Negroes were never more
qvijet than now. In every instance, known
to me, masters have informéd them fully of
their situation and given them liberty, in
specified time, to make their own atran^
ments. In every instance, I believe, after
little wandeiriug about the neighborhood,
they have*gladly returned (Pome, and are
fully content to remain till January, as
heretofore. Most of the though tfttl negroes
regard their freedom,|j| the way it has been
accomplished, as a great misfortune. Said
one, a very sensible negro : "What can I do
to support myself and family? I have no
land, no house, no mule, no plows, no fféars,
no money, and no qné will hire me. ' A
few persons, who, from peculiar circum-
stances, oould not find employment for theit
negro 8, and wLo were unprofitable ., tiem,
have driven^ them^from hdme.^ These ne-
