Caution to Consumers of Coal Oil.
BSyThls company from this date will not Imndlo Ilimininco OH and Piiro-
UllO for the following reasons : JliHuru"CO Oil Tank Co. who claim to own
these Trade Mark brands have not during several years past had any regular source of Oil
supplies but have received Insurance Oil and Pnrollno from sources where they
could buy cheapest without regard to quality. Insurance OH is simply
any quality of Water White oil. Consumers hilVO no Kimrailtoo of Its Fire
Test or purity. 1'urolilio is simply any quality of 74 Gasoline. As Gasoline
varies great y in purityt consumers should only buy under the proper name of 7i 0 Gas-
oline and then be sure the goods are guaranteed by responsible parties. The quality of
Insurance Oil and Purolllio which has been furnished by Insurance Oil Tank
Co. has almost entirely stopped the demand but wc wish to warn Intended purchasers we

The Structure Described and Details How
the Great Work Whs Accomplished.
The great bridge which unites the cities of
New York and Brooklyn. It has cost $15-
500000 and its construction has occupied 14
years. The Legislature of 1867 passed the
charter provisionally fixing the capital at
$5000000 and permitting the two cities to
contribute ns much money to the enterprise
as their common councils deemed expedient.
Piivate capital was to supply the remainder
of the sum required. Subsequent legislation
made the bridge the property of the two cities
Kew York contributing 33 1-3 per cent and
Brooklyn 66 2 3 per cent of the total cost of
construction. Great changes were made in
the plan of the bridge as at first proposed.
The height was increased from 130 to 135
feet and the breadth from 80 to 85 feet. This
of course greatly increased the coast of con-
struction. The towers which support the ca
bles are 276 feet high and rest upon the bed
rock at a depth of 78 feet. The approaches
are of granite with archways constructed
with a view to their use as warehouses. The
span of the bridge proper is 1595 feet in
length. 1 ne terminal elevations In iNcw
York and Brooklyn are 38.17 and 61 32 feet
above hich water mark respectively. The
supporting cables merely rest upon the tow
ers exerting a vertical pressure ana are ias-
tened at anchorages on each side 930 feet
island from the towers. Tbe an-
chorages are cubical masses of stone
masonry rising 90 feet above high water
matk and measuring 119x132 feet at the base
their weight being 60000 tons each. The
frame work is held by steel suspenders at-
tached to the cables. A multitude of suspen-
soiy ropes of steel wire also diverge from the
tops of the towers to points 15 leet apart along
the bottom floor of the vertical trusses com-
posing the roadbed. The weight of freely-
moving vehicles the bridge can sustain is 13S0
tons making with the weight of the cables
and frame work a total of 8120 tons to be
sustained by the cables and stays.
The roadway consists of five parallel avenues
at the average width of 16 feet separated by
six vertical lines of trussing the outside para-
pets being eight feet high. The outside
avenues devoted to vehicles are 19 feet wide
while the central pedestrian way is 15 feet
wide and elevated 12 feet above the others.
The cars are moved by a stationary engine'
and endless lope of steel wire. The four sus-
taining cables arc nearly 16 inches in diam-
eter and ie composed of a multitude of steel
wires twisted in skeins and wrapped in an
encircling wire.
But the great work was the laying of the
founditims of the towers. This was done by
caissons or chests 102 by 172 feet in length
and breadth and 22 feet in depth. The
masonry was built upon this caisson which
was sunk to the bottom. Then the earth was
removed by workmen in its interior until the
bed rock was reached. The Interior was then
filled willi concrete. The compressed air was
preserved by a double set of doors with an in-
lervcnirg lock one of which was always shut
belore the other was opened.
Altogether no less than Coo men have been
employed in the work. Since the death of
Mr John A. Rochling who was killed in
1S69 more that 20 men hive been fatally
hurt and several more have died from the
the caisson disease caused by working in
compressed air of the caissons.

end near the Uly nan to bands t'reet
