When was Cluist born ? Amonp scholars
it has long been placed five years before the
current reckoning. Trofcsior Satller of
Munich finally settle1 the question by the
discovery oi some ancient copper coins which
were struck by order of Herod Antinas. who
became Tetrach of Galilae and the Perea at
the death of his falher Herod ihe Great.
The dates upon the coins show this to have
occurred four years before A D. I according
to our reckoning. Christ's life Christ was
born in the 7.19th year after the founding of

This is now A. D. 1888. instead of 1883 as it
is now 1888 years since Christ was born.

MOD LAW IN KANSAS.
Dodge City In the Hands or Desperadoes.
St. Louis May 9. The l'ost-Diipatch'i
special from Kansas City says: For the
past 10 days a remarkable and startling state
ol attain has existed at Dodge City Kansas
andall mention thereof has been kept quiet
Several promlcnt Kansas City attorneys left
lo-day lor lopeka to petition Governor Click
to place the lown under martial law. The
difficulty is the culmination of a long-standing
leud between two elements of that place
Dodge City has long enjoyed the reputation
of being a hard place. It was one of a
few points in Kansas where saloons run
openly and gambling is legitimatized. It is
the headquarters of cowboys and cattle
mtn of the vicinity llefore the last city
election the Mayor was a man named
Webster proprietor of a dive half
saioon anu nan gamming house and variety
hall. He was the representative of a lower
element and ine sporting fraternity. The
head of the other faction was W. H. IlnmV
This element was quieter but there was a
umcr iceung ueiwecn tne two. At the elec-
tion for Mayor Harris was beaten and Degue
Webster's candidate was elected. Since
then it concluded to drive Harris out. About
10 days aco a man named Short who i nan.
nerof Harris and a police officer had a shoot-
ing affray but n-ither was hurt. Short was
thrown into jail although the evidence showed
mat ne was tired at first. Later five gamblers
were arrested and iailed. That nlnht a vint-
lance committee was formed with Tnm
Nixon proprietor of one of the hardest dance
nouses in the West at the head. The crowd
repaired to the ja.il nnd notified the prisoners
that they must leave the town the next morn-
ing Meantime Ihe vigilants took pos-
session of the town. Correspondents
of newspapers were notified that they
must not send telegrams. A body of
armed men watched the arrival of each train
to sec that there was no interference. A law
yer was sent lor Irom Larned by one ol the
prisoners. He was met hv the vmilnnt. u.i.
levelled a gun at his head and told him hot to
stop. Next morning the five gamblers were
put on the westward bound train and Short
left for Kansas City where he is now. Dodge
City is practically in the hands of the vigilants
and the situation is more serious from the fact
that the Mayor is acting with them. It was
.... iiuiiucu me prisuucrs mat tney must
go. Trains are still watched and armed men
guard the town while the list of others who
will be ordered out is being prepared. Dodge
City is in the hands of desperadoes and the
lives and properly af citizens are not safe.

Severe Hurricane
Easton Pa. May 9. Passengers state that
the hurricane on the Lehigh and Wyoming
valley last night was the severest known in
Easton Pennsylvania. Uetween Perm Havtn
and Hazleton trees in the woods for a dis-
tance of 2000 feet were mowed down like
grass. The wind and rain beat so hard
againt windows in the cars the passenger had
to place cushions and seats against them to
prevent them from being blown in. The en-
gineer of one train to avoid wreck by falling
trees reduced speed to coal train time. At
Gould's siding near Whitehaven the engine
of a passenger train was struck by a failing
telegraph pole and damaged The same pole
struck a passenger car making splinters of
its front. About the same time a tree fe 1
and broke the windows of the right side thus
alarming the passengers. All this occurred
while the train was running at full speed. A
short distance below the train men had to
move two telegraph polei that had blown
across the track. Near Rockfort a rock
weighing 30 tons rolled from the hillside and
lodged on the track. The watchman saw it
in time to stop trains going the other way.
Nearing Sloney creek station four freight
cars of a moving Lehigh Valley train were
overturned.
