SPECIAL LAWS. 45
SEC. 3. The said Belton Independent School District, as
created by this Act, shall have and exercise and is hereby vested
with all the rights, powers, privileges and duties of an independent
school district incorporated under the General Laws of this
State, and the board of trustees of the said district shall have
and exercise all the right, powers, privileges and duties conferred
and imposed by the General Laws of Texas upon the trustees
of such a school district incorporated under the General
Laws' of the State, except as otherwise provided for in Section
4 of this Act.
SEC. 4. The trustees of said district shall have the power to
levy and collect an annual ad valorem tax not to exceed one dollar
and fifty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of taxable
property in the district, for the maintenance of schools therein,
and a tax not to exceed fifty cents on the one hundred dollars
for the purpose of purchasing, constructing, repairing, or equipping
public free school buildings within the limits of such district
and the purchase of the necessary sites, therefor; provided,
that the amount of maintenance tax, together with the amount
of bond tax of the district, shall never exceed one dollar and
fifty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of taxable property;
and provided further that no such tax shall be levied, and
no such bonds issued, until after an election shall have been held
wherein a majority of the taxpaying voters, voting at said election,
shall have voted in favor of the levying of said tax, of the
issuance of said bonds, or both, as the case may be, and which
election shall be held in accordance with provisions of the General
Laws.
SEC. 5. The City of Belton is hereby divested of the title to
all school property and of any control and management of the
public schools of the said city and the title to said school property
and the said control and management of the said public
schools are hereby vested in the Belton Independent School District
as herein created.
SEC. 6. The depository of the board of trustees of the public
free schools of the City of Belton shall until the expiration
of the term for which it was selected be the depository of the
Belton Independent School District, and all money or other property
belonging to said school in its possession, or in the possession
of such board of trustees, or any of its officers, shall from
the taking effect of this Act be held, used and applied to and
for the use and benefit of the said Belton Independent School
District; provided, that at the expiration of the term of the
said depository the Board of School Trustees of the Belton Independent
School District shall select a depository, upon competitive
bid, as provided in the General Law for the selection of a
depository for school districts incorporated for free school purposes
only. That any tax levied for the year 1926 and any
prior year by the city council of the City of Belton for the maintenance
of its schools, now uncollected is hereby validated in all
respects and shall be collected and paid by the collector of said
