SAM SATAN
A Georgia Negro with a Wondeiful
Appetite.
An Albany Ga. dispatch to the
Atlanta Constitution says:
A tall negro all joints and angles.
His clothing is shabby and self-
sustained from frequent trudges
through the furrows of rich earth
turned up by the plow in the great
fields of the cotton plantations in this
section.
A brand new helmet hat in navy
blue which crowns a head well cov-
ered with wool adds to the shabby
appearance by its very newness and
gloss of the garments with which his
body is clothed.
This is Sam Satan one of the queer
characters w hich the oaky woods con-
tribute to the floating population of
Albany upon Saturdays and holiday
occasions. Standing in his bare feet
he measures 6 feet 6 inches in height.
Around his neck suspended by a
red string is hung for use as well as
ornament one of those singular wea-
pons of defense known as “brass-
knucks.” They are nickle-plated and
glisten in the sunlight.
He has no necessity for this instru-
ment of w arfare for he is mighty in
strength and could floor an ox with
one well directed blow with his bony
fist.
He can carry four men one on his
back one held by each arm and one
by his teeth.
His appetite is enormous. One day
the boys at Albany tested his capaci-
ty in that direction.
His meal consisted of the follow-
ing:
Raw beef 7 pounds.
Sausage meat 2 pounds.
Whisky one pint.
Eggs twenty-eight.
These were all devoured with great
relish and if pressed to further par-
take Sam could have managed to add
to his meal considerably.
Occasionally Sam gets to town
where tie remains two or three days
There is always a crowd around him
and he is never happier than when
as a modern Pan he plays upon his
pipes the queer reeds common to the
country darky of a generation ago.
He is an expert with these instru-
ments of music and when seated up-
on a convenient dry goods box or
office step he tunes up he finds him-
self instantly the center of an ad-
miring throng.
Sam is well acquainted with the
haunts and habits of the wild beasts
which inhabit the swamps and for-
ests of the oaky woods and young
otters baby btJtiH and other youthful
animals bring a good price in the
Albany market when he stumbles
upon a lucky find.
A Flying Meteor.
Those of the citizens residing on
East Commerce street who happened
to be looking in the right direction
were treated to a splendid sight last
evening at 8:15 o’clock. A brilliant
meteor was observed shooting in a
westerly direction at an apparently
low elevation. It presented the ap-
pearance of a brilliant ball of fire of
iridescent hues changing from light
green to rich orange and red. It
threw off a train of brilliant sparks
and remained in view for about one
minute
The latest Central American conun-
drum “Was Menendez poisoned?”
has as yet received no answer. The
reports sent out “revolution but all
quie ” remind one of the cry of the
Glasgow watchman: “All's well!
Two o’clock and an Irishman drown-
ed in the Clyde. All’s well! All’s
well!”

PIGOTT
A QUESTIONABLE DODGE.
It has become so common of late to
regale the public with such very in-
teresting stories about one or another
“curious incident” which stories al-
ways end in some humbug advertise-
ment scheme that one rarely ever
knows whether he can spenu time in
reading any newspaper statement
whatever. Ths unlicensed extent to
which such practices are being carried
would seem to call for a law to sup-
press the use of the public prints for
purposes of deception for what bet-
ter is it in morals to take a man’s
time under false pretences than to
take his money? Let everybody es-
chew’ all sucn dodges and patroniz-
only outspoken and reliable advertls.
