'John Wesley' visits Rusk church
An unusual visitored, identifying
himself as John Wesley, founder of
Methodism, surprised members of
the First United Methodist Church
at the May 7 morning worship.
As the Rev. Dr. Gary Fitzgerald,
pastor of the church, prepared to
get into the morning message, a
voice from the rear of the sanctuary
asked "is this gathering a
Methodist Society?"
The visitor was a short man
wearing a gray peruke or periwig,
garbed in 19th century ministerial
black coat, white jabon (a fall of
lace or cloth attached to the collar),
knee pants, wrapped legs and
buckle shoes.
Mr. Wesley was portrayed by
Bill Vance, retired airline captain
with Frontier Airlines. His wife is a
diaconal minister in education at
the First United Methodist Church,
Hurst. They have presented John
Wesley to more than 90,000

Association slated
to meet May 18
There will be a meeting of the
Wells Homecoming Association
Thursday night, May 18, at 7 p.m. at
the high school, according to Jackie
McKnight, president.
Among the items to be discussed
are the allocation to public
organizations of money earned by
the 1989 Homecoming Queen can-
didates. Money earned is
traditionally used to better the
community. This year, more than
$9,000 was collected.
Children's choir
will present
'Creation Sensation'
The Rusk First Baptist Church
Children's Choir will present the
musical "Creation Sensation" by
Lynn Hodges and Joy Mackenzie at
7 p.m. Sunday at the Cherokee
Theatre. Creation Sensation is the
Biblical account of creation from
Genesis set in a musical play.
The story is told from ther per-
spective of a middlegrade child who
is preparing an assigned speech for
a science class on "How the Earth
Began." Creation Sensation is both
a delightful musical experience for
young and old alike,...and a sound,
if not sensational, Christian
educational adventure!
The public is invited to attend.
There will be no admission fee.
Softball anyone?
A meeting will be held 2:30 p.m.
Sunday, May 22, at Memorial
Missionary Baptist Church, Rusk,
to discuss forming an area church
Softball league. Persons interested
are invited to attend.

to the Dean's List at Lon Morris

cording to Academic Dean Virgil

Methodists in congregations and
conferences across the nation.
As Mr. Wesley approached the
front of the santuary, Dr. Fit-
zgerald offered him the pulpit and
microphone. Wesley replied in a
booming voice that he was capable
to speak without the amplification.
"I once addressed 3,000 people as I
stood in the coal mining area of
Great Britian."
He remarked that it was his duty
from the very begining to inter-
perate among the Societies to
inquire of their faith and good
works.
The visitor urged members of the
administrative board to stand, so he
could have a better look at them. He
told board members that they
"must be strong and dynamic out
there among strangers. A member
of the board is in truth and in fact a
leader. Leadership is an oppor-
tunity to serve. A Methodist leader
is a teacher, a spiritual guide. One
who is willing to do anything to
make any sacrifice in the name of
the Lord."
In like fashion, he invited Sunday
School teachers to stand. With the
teachers, he included workers with
youth and all involved in Christian
Education. He reported he had
established the first Sunday School
in America. "Working with
children and youth greatly
strengthens a teacher's ability to do
the will of God. It is a strong faith,
indeed, that can behold a student
and see him as a child of God-when
at that moment he is doing his ut-
most to emulate one of the Devil's
own imps."
Wesley admonished the
congregation concerning their
regular attendance. "Anyone who
has occasional or haphazard atten-
dance to worship God and to receive
instruction from His servant ceases
to be Methodist atall."
"Total commitment, of prayer, of
presence, of gifts, and of service.
That is Methodism, and Methodism
is nothing less. I charge you all. Do
all the good you can, by all the
means you can, in all the ways you
can, in all the places you can, at all
the times you can, to.all the people
you can for as long as ever you. And
do not forget your recreation.
Recreating is vital to good health
and well-being. So for recreation I
would have you find some good
work serving God and your fellow
man and enjoy it!"
IS IT REALLY? The visitor May 7 at Rusk First United Methodist
Church only impersonated John Wesley, founder of
Methodism. Bill Vance of Hurst, left, visits with church pastor,
the Rev. Dr. Gary Fitzgerald at the Rusk First United Methodist
Church.
