To the reader.
One evening last January, while reading the 1972
edition of The Texas Folklore Society collection, I
ran across these words: "Hardly any Texas Negro his-
tory and folklore has been recorded." That same day,
I had heard a high school teacher from Maine tell of
an historical archive at the University of Maine, whose
purpose is to store an oral history of that area. The
teacher had been speaking to Lincoln King's Loblolly
staff in Gary, Texas, a staff whose high school maga-
zine is devoted to the Foxfire* concept of teaching.
These two related events of that January day have
converged to make Black Gold. After interviewing 11
Panola and Harrison County residents, 6 students at
Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas, have trans-
cribed, edited, and typed for printing, the contents
of this book. A 7th has helped with the pictures.
The local newspaper quotes me as having set this
goal:
"To give to Black students a sense of achievement
and pride in their East Texas heritage and to teach
them the idea that work on the part of their ancestors
is a pattern for Black youth of today to follow."
Frankly my goal, though not so high sounding as
they have reported, was to lead a group of Black young
adults to lead. Once I had tapped their source of
pride, they led me and became a pattern for me to fol-
low. Between us, we have challenged one another. The
result is a mutual trophy: Black Gold.(continued on inside back cover)
