page 30 July 1836 the great City of Houston
We heare glowing acounts of the City on buffalo
bayou. several families from Brazoria and
Columbia have moved there among them Ben
Fort Smith & his Mother Mrs. Obedience Smith
and family Mr. Woodruf Mr. Man wife and two
step sons Florney Hunt and Sam Allen & Mosly
Baker and others. uncle James Wells has gone
to Houston to locate land Evey body has the
Houston fever, they building a steam saw-mill
there. Father is going to locate land near Houston
on brays bayou. Mr. Smith wanted him to settle
in town. said he would give Father alot. Father
Could not do so. will have to live on the land to
secure a title. the Fourth of July has come &
gone. we had no Cele-brtion will have a barbecue
and ball in September. President David G. Burnet
has issued proclamation for an Election the first
monday September. the young people have no
amusements or Church to attend. I am in my
twelfth 12 year have not heard a sermon since
Easter sunday the year 33 then in then in New
Orleans. we were disap-pointed last Christ-mas
in our Expectation of going to Henry Jones to
aball and seeing the steam boat yellow stone.
She ran down the river afew days before the
battle of San Jacinto the mexicans threw lariat
to Catch her. she has gone to new Orleans.

August has come but it seems like September
will never come. our school is doing well. several
young men have Entrd school among them leo
and Jac Roark Moses and James Shipman Mr.
Colder & Harvy Staffod. Mr. Stafford has gone
back to the united States. his wife will return to
texas thiss winter and take the slaves back to
Eastern texas. there will be plenty of corn rased
this year in our neighbor hood but no Cotton as
there is no Cotton gin Father says there will be
good Crops of both corn and Cotton rased near
Brazoria and Columbia. there is one of FathersSt. louis friends Mr. Gearetee visiting us his wife
was asister to Ex Governor Henry Smiths wife.
Mr. Garetee wife died while we were living in
St. louis. he had two little Children a boy named
Edwin girl named Martha Mother took care of
the Children till they were sent to married sisters
in kentucky we were gald to se Mr. Garetee as
he had seen Mothers Father. just three month
be-fore and as we had not hear or had a letter
from St. louis in three years it was agreat sat-
isfactions to hear from ou Friends

the first of September was Monday the Election
was the firs Election under the new Republic of
texas.
Every thing comes to those that wate. the
barbecue ball and Election was at Mr. Dyers
near our house. the people came from different
settlements and several of our Harris-burgs
friends William Harris and Robert Willson Judges
Clinton Harris Clerk Others from Harris-burg
were Mr. Doby George and Isaac Igmis James
Bruster Miss Isabell Harris sister of the four
Harris brothers louis B Harris and several young
ladies among them Miss Elisabeth & Jane Earl
Mr. McDermet the Courier that carried the news
of the battle of San Jacinto to the Sabine River.
he was quite a hero young handsom and socible
.was electioneering for Sam Houston and
Mirabeau lamar. When the returns came in
Houston was Elected president lamar vice-
president I had been to an Election in Harris burg
in the year 33 when a Delegate was Elected to
reprsent texas and Couhila in the mexican
Congress. dont remember the name of the
candidates the next Election I attended was at
mr Dyers whe Delegates were sent to San
Felipe in the fall of 35. W. P. Harris and C. C.
Dyer were Elected at that time.
