and I am still of that opinion that, had the en-
gagement become general, I would have
mingled with LeTulle and Trimble in the fray;
and had the tide of battle gone against at, with
them I would have run away, for my steed stood
saddled "impatient his master to bear." But be
that as it may this, reader, is a truthful account
of the battle of Sabine Pass; and I tell you that
there would have been no battle if Capt. Odlum
had said retreat; and I tell you further that I do
not believe he would have said fight, but for
the bold and decided manner in which Victor
LeTulle, aided by Trimble, urged it. And all
that talk about Dick Dowlin's having fought
that battle against orders is humbug. I loved
Dick Dowling when living, revere his memory
now that he's dead; and I tell you that he was
not a man to disobey orders. He was a great
and a grand soldier.
And, now, reader, let's go to sleep, for 1863
is forever gone glimmering down the stream of
time and 1864 is born.

Here closes the manuscript and all papers
that have been sent up for the publication and
so far as the Sharp-Shooter is concerned, this
closes our history. When we published it in book
form it will be completely revived and will be
completed in full.
