From an historical perspective, the Wild-
cats of Columbus Colored School of the "thir-
ties"--the beginning-were never first and only
about winners, losers, and game statistics but
rather, also about the teaching and learning of
such human values as integrity, courage, con-victions of belief, compassion, rights and re-
sponsibilities as citizens, teamwork, about clear-
ing hurdles and exemplifying the term "scholar-
athlete," thereby making a point that education
is indeed lifelong learning and as testimony that
athletics and scholarship and excellence can
abide together, that perhaps education is not
the only key to the future, but it is the key that
opens the most doors-a master key, if you will.
And finally, Paul Robeson was a man who
truly exemplified the team, "scholar-athlete."
He gave us this admonition: "It has seemed
strange to some that having attained some stat-
ure and acclaim as an artist, I should devote
much time and energy to the problems and
struggles of working men and women. To me,
of course, it is not strange at all. I have simply
tried never to forget the soil from which I
spring."
And this is the journey of the Wildcats of
the "thirties" and what they were about.182
