Consider the Lily: The Ungilded History of Colorado County, Part 6
by Bill Stein ........................................................... 75
On the Cover
Jack Jackson of Austin began his artistic career in the 1960s as a comics artist on the Ranger,
the humor magazine of the University of Texas, and as a creator of underground comic books, for
which he adopted the psuedonym "Jaxon." In later years, he turned his attention to Texas history,
producing three lengthy, highly-acclaimed comic-book histories, and other more conventional
books, including his monumental study of Spanish ranching in pre-Alamo Texas, Los Mesteilos. His
cover drawing depicts the death of John Samuel Shropshire at the Battle of Glorieta Pass in New
Mexico.
Acknowledgements and Notes
"Consider the Lily" is dedicated to Bob Pickens, Myrah Jane Draper, Alfred Pavlu, Tracey
Wegenhoft, Jim Kearney, Rollin Baker, Ernest Mae Seaholm, Frances Seifert, Ilse Miller, Mildred
Campbell, Elizabeth Schoellmann, Joe Fling, Jim Sewell, and the other interested citizens who
provided strong verbal support of the archives to the Colorado County Commissioners Court on two
different occasions, and to the memory of Dr. James H. Wooten, Jr., who frequently urged me to
write a complete history of the county. Grateful thanks for their indispensible help are offered to
Donaly Brice of the Texas State Archives and Galen Greaser of the General Land Office, and to
everyone else on the staff at the archives, the land office, and The Center for American History; also
to Darlene Hayek, the Colorado County Clerk, and Harvey Vornsand, the Colorado County District
Clerk, and their always-hospitable staffs.
Special thanks are due to W. M. Von-Maszewski and his staff at the George Memorial
Library in Richmond for their patient cooperation with our unduly massive effort to catalogue all the
men from Colorado County who served in the Confederate military.
