Acknowledgements and Notes
"Consider the Lily" is dedicated to Bob Pickens, Myrah Jane Draper, Alfred Pavlu, Tracey
Wegenhoft, Jim Kearney, and the other interested citizens who provided strong verbal support of the
archives to the Colorado County Commissioners Court some three years ago, and to the memory of
Dr. James H. Wooten, Jr., who frequently urged me to write a complete history of the county.
Grateful thanks for their indispensible help are offered to John Bowers, for his translations of Spanish
documents, to Donaly Brice of the Texas State Archives and Galen Greaser of the General Land
Office, and to everyone else on the staff at the archives, the land office, and The Center for American
History; also to Darlene Hayek, the Colorado County Clerk, and Harvey Vornsand, the Colorado
County District Clerk, and their always-hospitable staffs.
