Nesbitt Memorial Library Journal
The last death of a military man in Colorado County during the World War
II period occurred in March 1946, when Warrant Officer Alfred Girouard of Galveston
was found shot to death in his car near the Borden underpass. A double-barrel shotgun
was found at his side, along with a note to his wife which read simply, "I can't go on
any longer." He had $88 in cash. His death was ruled a suicide. His body was taken to
Galveston for burial. Apparently, Girouard was one of the many who could not adjust
to life in post-war America.126
