Brief History of Columbus
earlier he had practiced law in both Kentucky and Tennessee (see District
Court Minutes C2, page 147, Office of the District Clerk, Colorado
County, Texas). He was listed on the 1860 census as a resident of
Colorado County, with his wife, Gabriella Rebecca, and four daughters
(see Eighth Census of the United States (1860), Colorado County, Texas
and Shropshire Family File, Archives of the Nesbitt Memorial Library,
Columbus, Texas). Gabriella died the next year (see Memorial and
Genealogical Record of Southwest Texas, Chicago: Goodspeed Broth-
ers, 1894, page 165). Her death freed him to make, on July 22, 1863,
a fortunate second marriage to Caroline Shropshire, the sister of wealthy
plantation owner Charles William Tait. Caroline's first husband, John
Samuel Shropshire, who was also Gabriella Rebecca Delaney's brother,
had been killed in the Civil War (see Marriage Book D, pages 52 and 127,
Office of the County Clerk, Colorado County, Texas, Shropshire Family
File, Archives of the Nesbitt Memorial Library, Columbus, Texas, and
War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate
Armies, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1880-1900, series 1,
volume 9, page 537). He represented Colorado and Lavaca Counties in
the Fourteenth Legislature, which met January 13 through May 4, 1874
and again from January 12 through March 15, 1875 (see Members of
the Texas Legislature, n. p., n. d., page 81). On January 1, 1882, he
was appointed to the Commission of Appeals, which had been created
by an act of the state legislature on July 9, 1879 to decide, with the
consent of the involved parties, civil cases pending before the Texas
Supreme Court or the Court of Appeals. He was reappointed on October
1, 1883 (see The Laws of Texas 1822-1897, volume 9, pages 62-64 and
S. A. Posey, Texas Unreported Cases, volume 1, St. Louis, Missouri: The
Gilbert Book Company, 1886). He was not, however, a delegate to the
Constitutional Convention of 1875, which drafted the constitution that
was adopted by the state in 1876 (see Journal of the Constitutional
Convention of the State of Texas, 1875, n. p., n. d., which lists the
delegates on pages 3-4). He was elected county judge on November 4,
1890 (see Record of Election Returns 1884-1898, Office of the County
Clerk, Colorado County, Texas) and served one two-year term (see
Commissioners Court Minute Book 5, page 64, Office of the County
Clerk, Colorado County, Texas). He died on December 16, 1900 (see
The Houston Post, December 17, 1900).
Columbus is the home of the present chairman of the National Committee of Rivers and
Harbors, Congressman J. J. Mansfield.
Joseph Jefferson Mansfield was born in what is now West Virginia on
February 9, 1861. He came to Texas in 1881, stopping at Alleyton (see
February 17, 1943 letter from J. J. Mansfield to John Maragon,43
