Nesbitt Memorial Library Journal
buildings in and around town are well under way, while the country precincts, as
seen across the open prairie, are becoming thickly dotted with new residences.
... Almost daily, carload after carload of household effects, live stock, farm
implements and forage, shipped direct from the north by new settlers, is arriving,
and at times the railway sidings here lead the small boy to believe that Barnum's
circus is being unloaded. ... Capt. C. S. Penfield, the business manager of the
Rock Island company at Houston, was in town Friday and seemed well pleased
with the way immigration matters are shaping toward the colony.
Rock Island Ripples, November 29: Fire broke out in the local gin here yesterday,
which caused quite a crowd to turn out as a fire brigade. The fire was
extinguished before much damage was done. ... Mr. Sheley's drug store building
is nearing completion and his large stock of drugs will be opened up this week.
... There are so many new homes in Rock Island that one scarcely knows his next
door neighbor. So we are city like, you see, in more ways than one.... We have
been fortunate enough to have religious services now several Sundays in
succession. ... A brick yard has been opened here. ... The Weller and Ratcliffe new
business house on Main street is well under way. ... At least half a dozen nice
residences are under contract to be erected at once. ... A new blacksmith shop
will be thrown open by tomorrow.
December 9, 1897 Rock Island Ripples, December 6: A few capitalists from Milwaukee have wired
that they will be here this week. We hope soon to have banking and other modern
facilities for doing business. ... Owing to the rapid influx of people and increased
demand for lots, the local town site managers have found it necessary to put on
a new addition on the east side. Already two new buildings are under construction
thereon. ... Dr. Woodruff purchased some town property today and contemplates
a new building soon. ... There is talk of organizing a Masonic lodge here. ... Time
to plant shade and fruit trees, and some are taking advantage of it. ... A train of
some fifteen or twenty wagons laden with home seekers is on the way from Ellis
and adjacent counties and is expected to arrive here the early part of next week.
December 16, 1897 Rock Island Journal: The enormous amount of lumber sold in Rock Island, the
principal part of which has gone into the country, attests the real settlement of
the country in this colony.
Rock Island Journal: November 15, when this town was but twenty-three months
old, Rock Island had just made the round trip of an adult - birth, marriage and a
death.
Rock Island Journal: The first excursion of December arrived in Rock Island
Thursday under the management of Messrs. A. M. & J. H. York in M. K. & T. chair
car No. 100, bringing about thirty prospectors. Next week's Journal will contain
the personnel and a full report.
Rock Island Journal: About the first of next week an invasion is expected in the
Rock Island Colony of several families of home seekers from Hill, Bell and other
north and middle Texas counties. They write that they are on their way in wagons
and are in charge of a field agent of one of the local firms.176
