April 1, 1897anticipates quite a large attendance, and the citizens of Rock Island are glad to
know that they will have the honor of entertaining this distinguished represen-
tative body of men. ... On March the 5th, Friday morning, as your correspondent
approached the city limits of Rock Island he discovered that everybody in town
was engaged in reading a newspaper, and for a moment he could not imagine the
object of this unusual occurrence, but upon investigation he ascertained that the
Rock Island Weekly Journal had circulated among its subscribers for the first
time. The paper is a well edited, neatly printed, newsy, six column 4-page paper.
The citizens of Rock Island are proud of their paper and wish the editor and

twelve months. Bear in mind that harmony and intelligent co-operation will be
the great motive power in accomplishing this work. ... Several car-loads of
lumber, corn, flour, etc., have been received at this point within the last two
weeks.
