March 11, 1897preparations. ... Our excursion party of the 4th instant consisted of about twenty
persons. It was a jolly good crowd - everybody seemed well pleased and
especially those who bought lands.
Rock Island Ripples: Mr. A. D. Rust, who will be the editor and proprietor of our
Rock Island newspaper, and his son, A. D. Rust, Jr., editor and proprietor of the
Sealy News, are here getting everything properly arranged for the issue of the
paper, which we understand will make its appearance on the 19th. Mr. Rust is
an experienced newspaper man, and the people will find his paper devoted to the
best interest of its patrons and the public generally. ... Mr. Chas. Peterson,
president of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway immigration Association,
left Tuesday for Yoakum, to preside over one of the meetings. ... Mr. C. S.
Penfield came up from Houston Friday, and he and Mr. Chas. Peterson left
Monday via Eagle Lake for Columbus. ... Well, we are having erected a nice,
substantial warehouse. The people of Rock Island and vicinity regard this
building as a necessity. Heretofore all articles of merchandise have been delivered
on mother earth, to the annoyance and inconvenience of the public.
Rock Island Ripples: Mr. J. E. Spencer is laying the foundation on Main street for
a two-story business house. ... Mr. J. R. Mallorey is erecting a nice two-story
residence on Lupton street, and we understand he contemplates opening a
general merchandise business here. ... The people of Rock Island are planting fruit
and shade trees, also flowers and shrubbery. This will add greatly to our
improvements, and in a few years our streets, yards and gardens will present a
more pleasing appearance. ... Two more immigrant cars, loaded with nice horses
and mules, household furniture, etc., arrived here Saturday night. ... Mr. G. W.
Chalfant is making preparations for the erection of a two-story hotel on Cushen
street.
Rock Island Ripples: Mr. Chas. Peterson left Monday to be in attendance upon
the meeting of the San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway Immigration association,
which convenes at Beeville on Tuesday, 23d inst. ... Mr. C. M. Rhea is laying the
foundation for a photograph gallery on Main street, and when the building is
completed, Mr. Rhea will be in position to do first-class work. ... We are pleased
to note that we have a neatly finished and nicely painted freight depot, and the
agent, Mr. G. W. Schoeps, arrived Friday on 3:22 p. m. train to take charge of
the building. ... This movement on the part of the railroad company brings us in
connection with the outside world. The first telegraph message sent over the
wire from this place was sent by Mr. Chas. Peterson to Mr. C. S. Penfield of
Houston, dated Feb. 27, 1897. ... The public, no doubt, will be surprised to learn
since the first building was erected in Rock Island a year ago the 15th of Feb.,
1897, we have received over 100 cars of freight, and in the last three months
our business men have sold over 10 car loads of flour and feed. This item alone
is an indication that Rock Island is doing business at home, and that prosperity
is coming our way.
Rock Island Ripples: The next regular meeting to be held by the San Antonio &
Aransas Pass Railway Immigration association will be convened at this place on
Wednesday, March 24th. Mr. Chas. Peterson, president of the association,170
