The tournament format had been changed. Teams were now placed in one
of two divisions, the North and East Zone and the South and West Zone, with the winner
of each zone to meet in a best three out of five state championship series. The Truckers
opened the North and East Zone Tournament with their first (and what turned out to be
their only) game of the year with their old rivals, the Conroe Wildcats. But it was not
like the old days. Hand pitched a two-hitter, struck out ten, and the game was stopped
after seven innings because of the run rule. The Truckers, won 10-1.
Two nights later, the Houston Shell Oilers beat the Truckers, 8-6, despite
home runs by Segrist and Whitley. Bob McGee, who had joined the Truckers a month
earlier, pitched a two-hitter to beat Port Arthur, 12-0, the following night. Segrist was
again the hitting star, getting three hits, one of which was a home run. On June 21, they
got their second straight tournament shutout, this one a three-hitter by Womack, to beat
the La Grange Demons, 6-0. The Weimar team then drew the Oilers again, and hung
them with their first loss, 7-1, behind Hand. That win, on a Sunday afternoon, forced
the Truckers into an elimination game that same night against the Brenham Lions. With
Ehrler and Kana providing the pitching and Brock driving in three runs with three hits,
the Truckers knocked their hosts from the tournament, 6-3, and advanced to the finals.
There they met Shell for the third time and came away with their second win, 9-6, to
take the tournament championship. Four Truckers, Segrist, Brock, Hand, and Tompkins,
were named to the All North and East Zone Team.
The zone title put them into the state championship series, where they met
Herbert Kokernot's famous Alpine Cowboys. The Cowboys had won the South and
West Zone Tournament in Sinton, and wasted no time in adding the state championship
to their laurels. In the thin Alpine air, curve balls did not have the same break and the
ball lept off hitters' bats. The Truckers pounded out 19 hits, but the Cowboys countered
with 13, six of which were home runs, and won the first game, 17-10, on August 12.
Woody Bell, only recently added to the roster, did hit one home run for Weimar. The sec-
ond game, played the next day, was even wilder. Frank Kana hit the game's only home
run and Brock had six RBI, but the Truckers blew a five run lead in the bottom of the ninth
and Alpine won, 17-16. The Cowboys amassed 21 hits and the Truckers 13. Back home
in Weimar for the third game of the series on August 16, the offensive fireworks con-
tinued. Ehrler, just returned from a back injury, started, but he walked the first man, hit
the second, walked two more, hit another, got an out, then walked another man before
Miksch went to his bullpen. Ty Newton immediately roped a three run double off reliever
Jiggs Kana to put the Cowboys ahead, 5-0. Though the Truckers got four in the fifth
and four in the seventh, they never led and lost, 11-8.
Eliminated, the team turned its attention to the Houston Post Tournament.
On August 21, Jiggs Kana pitched a shutout and Womack went three for four with four
RBI as the Truckers beat Galveston Beach Club in the first round of the tournament. Three
days later, the Truckers scored five runs in the first inning, three of them on Ogletree's
bases loaded triple, and Bob McGee pitched a shutout, to beat the Livingston Cardinals
in the second tournament game, 5-0. But the Baytown Oilers benefited from crucial
errors by Hand and Womack and beat the Truckers, 5-4, on August 27.
Forced to win to stay alive, the Truckers beat the Huntsville Merchants,
8-1, on another solid pitching performance by Kana. On September 4, with Segrist
hitting three home runs, they avenged their earlier defeat and knocked Baytown out of
the tournament, beating them 15-4. That win put them into the Post Tournament finals
again, but this year the Victoria Rosebuds and Ox Miller beat Kana, 9-4, to win the title
and end the Truckers' season.16
