CANT KEEP A GOOD MAN
DOWN . . . ovor hear that expres-
sion? Woli, it suro applies to E. R
Gregg, president of t h o Citizens
State Bank. E. R. came to work
Tuesday feeling fino, but BOOM,
a pain hit him in the side. This
ailment usually knocks a man out
for throe or four days, so old
Roundabout dropped by the bank
Wednesday morning to see how E.
R. was getting along . . . Instead
of seeing a vacant seat behind the
president's desk, there he was, as-
suring everyone he was feeling
fino and working as hard as usual.
Speaking of good men, WALTER
RICHEY, vice president of the
bank, is recuperating nicely, and
should be back before too much
longer.
HAPPY, thafs about all you
can say about J. C. WILLIAMS,
Rusk's friendly Ford dealer. The
new Fords will be shown the first
of October, and Johnny is all
STEAMED-UP. He says that these
now Fords are real HONEYS . . .
As usual, Johnny is planning a big
BLOW-OUT . . . you can expect
some mighty nice gifts to be given
away ... he won't say exactly
what his plans are right now . . .
Old Roundabout got a sneak pre-
view of the new machines, and
they are really beautiful. Ford
really changed up the line this
year . . .
MRS. ROUNDABOUT visited
Mr. Joe Tuck, manager of Big
State Creamery in Jacksonville
one day last week. She is working,
up a feature on the dairying in-
dustry in Cherokee County, and
what it means to all of us. South
Texas Producers Association, the
milk shed for East Texas, has their
huge plant in Rusk, and furnishes
milk for Big State. Roundabout
has never had the pleasure of
meeting Mr. Tuck, but from what
Mrs. Roundabout says, he is a fel-
low worth knowing. Just about all
the folks In Rusk know Big State
dairy products. Around 75% of
milk sold in Rusk stores is from
our own local Big State Creamery.
This is good, because when a dol-
lar stays at home, instead of go-
ing up north, all of us in Cherokee
County benefit. Ifs local industry,
businesses and property owners
that make our schools, city govern-
ment etc. possible with their pay-
rolls and taxes. Roundabout is vain
enough to believe that we in Cher-
okee County a r e as good as the
best . . . consequently we are cap-
able of manufacturing the best
products ... bet we get no argu-
ment from this statement.
MBLBA CAMPBELL, hostess of
the very popular Coffee Time Pro-
gram on KTLU, pulled a surprise
on the ladies this week. Out of the
blue, she announced that the first
ten ladies who «ailed Pelton I
Banks Grocery, one of her ipon-i
>■ , would roeelee a pair o# toeu*

The telephone linos «logged, but
19 ladies got through, and were

The four-lane highway between
Rusk and Jacksonville was discuss-
ed here last Friday by officials of
Cherokee County and t he Texas
Highway Department, according to
J. W. Summers, County Judge.
A. C. Gentry, state district engi-
neer of Tyler, said the Highway
69 project was in position to be
started early in 1957 when all
items are approved.
Gentry turned over deeds of the
right-of-way between Rusk and
Jacksonville so that Cherokee
County could get them signed. The
property includes land needed to
widen the present highway be-
tween the two cities into four lan-
es separated in the middle.
Estimated cost of the project
will be in the neighborhood of
$600,000.
This projecMts part of a broad
plan to improve the thoroughfare
from the ,Gulf Coast to the north-
ern states.
Work is more than half com-
pleted on a portion of the widen-
ing southward from Tyler through
Bullard. The road was re-routed
on this section of the construction
job, and is east of the present
highway.
HERE IS ALL THAT'S LEFT of the 2-ton Chevrolet truck that ran wild through Rusk Tuesday after-
nbon at 3:25. The negro driver and owner of the truck, James Polk and Clarence Matlock, jumped sec-
onds before the truck crashed into the parked freight train.

THIS IS WHAT THE FRONT of the truck looked like after J. C Williams' wrecker pulled it away
from the freight car. Lumber was thrown from the truck several hundred feet, but no one was kill-
ed. School would have boon out only 3 minutes later, and no estimate can be given as to how many
Rusk youngsters would have died if the school bell had rung 3 minutes earlier.

The brakes failed on a 2-ton Bob-
tail Chevrolet truck, loaded with
green lumber, and it broke loose
21 miles out of Rusk on highway
110 around 3.25 Tuesday. The
truck sped down the steep hill in-
to the business section of town,
and crashed into a parked freight
train, behind the school bus barn
on Henderson Street, which comes
to 11 dead end at the railroad track.
Miraculously, no one was killed.
The truck belonged to Clarence
Matlock of Sacul, and was driven
by James I). Polk negro of Crush-
ing. Matlock was in the truck.
According to eye witnesses, Mat-
lock jumped from the truck direct-
ly in front of the bus barn, and
rolled on the pavement. The negro
stayed at the wheel until the last
second, jumping from the speed-
ing truck only '25 feet away from
the freight train. The machine was
traveling at an estimated speed of
around 70 miles per hour.
A train crow was only a few
feet away loading the train with
scrap iron at the time of the im-
pact.
Curtis Cartwright. an employee
of South Texas Producers Asoseia-
tion, narrowly missed death. Cart
wright was driving down Hender-
son Street, and slowed down to
turn into Weaver's Taxi Stand
when the truck rushed by, miss
ing him by a few inches.
C; lads tone Thompson, local tin
dertaker and ambulance operator,
was standing in the door of VV'al
lace Hardware & Furniture Com
pany when he saw the truck go
by. Thompson rushed to the acci-
dent scene seconds later and took
both men to the H11.sk Memorial
Hospital.
Matlock suffered a broken arm
and l'olk an injured foot. B 0 t h
were badly skinned up as a result
of their jump.
"We missed one of t h e worst
catastrophic^ here by only 3 min-
utes,'' commented Homer Smith,
city officer. "School would have
been out in just 3 more minutes
. . no telling how many would
have been killed."
Highway Patrolmen had stopped
this truck only a few minutes ear
lier near l'onta and removed one
driver because he did not have an
operators' license, Smith said.
Pending further investigation,
the City of Husk has not filed any
charges againsf the owner of the
truck
