aware of the many disadvantages against which we should
be obliged to contend—such as the depreciation of our
money, and its sea city, the high price of labor, &c.; yet
notwithstanding all these, we think the work one of such
immense importance to the commercial interests of our
city, that it is worthy the serious attention of all, and that
the beneficial results will amply compensate them for ary
present sacrifice which they may be called upon to make.
Among the many suggestions which we have heard, to
obviate the want' of money, the following, which was
made in our presence a few days since by a g nth-man of
this city, seems to us to possess some degree of feasibility,
although we confess that we are so lamentably ignorant
on subjects of this kind, that we almost dislike to express I
an opinion on them. The plan is simply to issue stock in
small shares, and pay the workmen, in part, either with
the certificates of stock themselves, or with notes guaran-
teed by the stock It is imagined that owners of negroes,
at seasons of the year when they have not much fortheir
hands to do, would let them work on the road, and receive
stock for their labor, while the white laboring man, by re-
i ceiving a par of his wages in money with which to fur-
nish the necessaries of life, would willingly (ake stock for
the balance, in a work which would inevitably pay a large
premium upon the capital invested.
The above is the simple suggestion made, and we think
that the immense importance of th-? subject demands for
