YAO TO START IN NBA ALL-STAR GAME, BRYANT LEADING VOTE-GETTER
NEW YORK (AP) - When the ball goes
up for the opening tip at the NBA All-Star
game Feb. 9 in Atlanta, Yao Ming will be the
center trying to win the jump ball for the
West.
The 7-foot-6 Houston Rockets rookie
from China will be starting for the Western
Conference after defeating Shaquille O'Neal
by almost a quarter-million votes in final fan
balloting totals released Thursday.
In the closest race, Kevin Garnett of
Minnesota edged Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas for
the last starting spot among Western
Conference forwards. Garnett received
1,086,780 votes, 7,355 more than
Nowitzki.
In the Eastern Conference, Allen Iverson
of Philadelphia drew almost 73,000 more
votes than Michael Jordan to earn the sec-
ond guard spot.
Yao will become the first rookie to start
in the All-Star game since Grant Hill in
1995. He is the 16th rookie in NBA history
to be named an All-Star starter and the
fourth center, joining O'Neal in 1993, Wilt
Chamberlain in 1960 and Ray Felix in 1954.
The rest of the West's starters are
Garnett, Tim Duncan of San Antonio, Steve
Francis of Houston and Kobe Bryant of the
Lakers.
Bryant was the leading overall vote-get-
ter with 1,474,386 out of more than 4.5
million ballots cast.

Mean Green alls 74-62
Chris Hawkes
Staff Writer
The NT men's basketball
team lost 74-62 to the New
Orleans Privateers in the
Lakefront Arena last night.
The Mean Green are 1-4 in
conference play and 6-11
overall.
"We had our chances,
they just didn't happen"
head coach Johnny Jones
said. "If they hadn't have
gotten that run in the first
half we're right there."
In the first half, UNO
scored 13 unanswered
points. Privateer forward
Hector Romero played all 20
minutes and scored 22 points
in the half.
"Romero is a great scorer,
he can score a lot of different
ways," Jones said.
NT held Romero to 6
points in the second half as
the Mean Green battled
back and cut the lead to
within 4 points, but UNO
took advantage of missed
shots and turnovers.
Senior guard Chris Davis
and junior forward Michael
DeGrate led the Mean
Green with 12 points apiece
and DeGrate added 7
rebounds.
Romero earned a double-
double for UNO with 28
points and 10 rebounds.
Late in the first half,
sophomore forward Adrian
Awasom collided with Davis.
The bulk of the 250-pound
Awasom landed on Davis'
head. Davis was shaken and
sat out for a few minutes, but
he did return to the game.
NT plays their next game
at 7 p.m. Saturday at South
Alabama.
