Committee on Territories to-day by a

the bill to provide for the organization
ol the Indian Territory and the public
land atrip Into the territory of Oklahoma.
The bill provides that nothing In It shall
be to coaitruoted to disturb the ex-
isting properly or treaty rights of the
Indians. The bill also provides that the
publlo land strips t hall be opened to set-
tlement under the provisions or the
homestead laws only.

Bryan T. Darry Chairman of the Stale
Democratic Executive Committee has
received replies from 28 or (be 31 mem-
bers of the committee as to whether
they wished to meet to select the tlmo
and plaoe for holding the Democratic
Htate convention. Eighteen or these
favor determining It br cerrespoadence.
The committee will therefore not be
called together. Letters will be ad-
dressed to tbem In a few days to ascer-
tain their preference for the place and
time of holding the convention. Home
of the committeemen In their replies
expressed their views as to the place
they being divided between Galveston
and Dallas. The convention will prob-
ably be held some time In August.

200 Italians assembled at the Canadian
i'aclllo depot to go west to work on the
road at $1.23 per day. Another body or
men. who thought the wages not large
enough. Interfered and persuaded thetn
from leaving. The strikers took posses-
sion of the cars and refused admission t
the others. Clubs and stones were freely
used. Several were Injured seriously.
Police are busy arresting the leaders.
Galvestox April 12. Mrs. Alice
Walkem who was convicted at the last
term of tke crlmlaal district court for
bigamy and sentenced to the penlteu-
tlary for one day. Jumped from I.abadls'
wharf Into the bay with suicidal Intent
about 8:30 o'clock last night. She was
discovered In her rash attempt and
rescued In time to save her lire. Slnoe
here return from the penitentiary she
has been very much depressed and It Is
believed that her complication of trou-
bles have overturned her reason.

nese syndicate bad entered Into a con-
tract with the Mexican government
whereby the syndicate agreed to send

next 12 months. The Mexican govern-
ment agrees to give each Chinamen 20
acres of land. Sixty Chinamen left fort-
land last week for Mexico. Others are
now preparing to leave.

for their graad street parade which
took place at 10 o'clock headed by the
Elgktb Catalry band. The marching
and counter-marching or the Knights
elicited a great deal of favorable com-
ment from the crowds of spectators

The members or Elk Lodge had made
great preparations on this their fifth
analversary and had Invited several
outside lodges or their brethren to eln
them In the celebration. Austin re-
sponded with a delegation or 10 or Its

Tbe 10 members present however ably
represented tbe Austin Lodge and their
