Mid-law senator Moses Mercado (left) makes a point while BOA
Director Carl Shaw takes notes.
SBA President Paul Clayton (front) and CLS President Laura Hunt
Swonke listen as others discuss the cheating policy.
The failure of the cur-
rent academic mis-
conduct policy to
firmly deal with stu-
dents who cheat was
the chief concern of
the 16 student leaders
who met January 20 at
The Houstonian.
The group, which SBA
president Paul Clayton
has established as a
permanent, standing
SBA committee (the
Executive Committee),
met so that student
leaders could share
various student con-
cerns. Though several
topics were discussed,
the prime concern
presented was that of
cheating.
Clayton explained to
the committee that the
current policy divides
academic dishonesty
into cheating on exams
and having possession
of unauthorized
material. There are
numerous possible
penalties for each
violation.
Dispite these various
penalties, many of
those present did not
think that the current
policy was strong e-
nough. Most favored
expulsion for those
caught cheating. This
is the same position
reflected in a SBA sur-
vey conducted shortly
after Clayton took of-
fice.
After thorough dis-
cussion on the cheat-
ing policy, BOA
di rector Carl Shaw
made a motion to es-
tablish a sub-commit-
tee to write a new
academic dishonesty
policy. This motion
was seconded and
passed.
Jana Fay Paxton, a
senior senator, will
serve as chair of the
sub-committee.
Others on the commit-
tee are Jack Carroll,
president of Delta
Theta Phi; Jan Delery,
a student member of
the Grading and Calen-
dar Committee; Jeff
Hastings, the Christian
Legal Society's liason
to the SBA; and
Sarajane Milligan,
president of the
Women's Legal Forum.
Clayton will serve as
an ex-officio member
of the sub-committee.
This sub-committee
will seek input from
the members of the Ex-
ecutive Committee and
review codes from
other law schools.
They will then write a
proposed code and pre-
sent it to the Executive
Committee for ap-
proval. Should it pass
the Executive Commit-
tee, it will be sent to
the SBA. Should it
pass there, Clayton
will present it to Dean
Wilks.

1 and will continue
