REFEEING SYSTEM.
As I have referred before to their double reception room,
the patient would of course be steered in to see Dr. Stotts as
he supposed, and he was not allowed to see Young, and vice
versa with Young's patients. So after Stotts' patients,
whom he had failed to relieve, would begin to kick and so
would Young's patients. They would tell the patient kick-
ing that in a few days they expected a famous physician
from Europe who was traveling through this country on a
vacation, and he had consented to stop over and make him
a visit, and he was going to ask him to see the patient for
him. So in a few days the patient would be introduced to
this wonderful doctor from Europe, who would be Stotts
or Young, as the case might be, he would take the patient
into his office in which the patient had been treated by the
other, in fact the doctors would exchange offices until they
caught another crop of suckers. He would make a thorough
examination of the patient and look very grave and say to
the patient that the doctor was doing all he could, but that
he himself was in possession of the knowledge of a wonder-
ful remedy that had only been recently discovered in Eu-
rope, and the physicians in this country had not gotten in
possession of it yet, and it would be the thing for him. In
fact it was indicated in his case, and was the only thing
that would effect a cure, but that it was very expensive and
would cost him quite a good deal, perhaps two hundred dol-
lars. So the poor fool had no alternative but to come
across.
This is their method of refeeing their patients. When
there was only one in an office there was always some ren-
egade doctor who makes that his business, traveling from
one of these fake joints to another, representing himself as
some great eastern physician. He would always notify the
doctor in charge in time so that he could have his patients
fixed for his reception. Our prosecution of Stotts and Com-
pany have caused them to discontinue their business and
leave the city.35
