an Antonio, Texas.
W HILE Texas was yet a republic the southwestern part of its territory bore favorable
reputation among those sturdy pioneers, who subsequently wrested that vast domain
from Mexico and made an independent dominion of it, as possessing a climate suited
to the needs of those of their fellows as were predisposed to lung disease.
When the Alamo fell and Crockett and Bowie met death in the horrible massacre which
occurred within its sacred walls, to which they had taken refuge for defense and safety, the
immortal Bowie, one of the bravest defenders of the old church and hardest fighters on the
frontier, was slowly but surely dying of consumption.
He had been drawn to Texas by the reputation then borne by San Antonio for salubrity
of climate, but, like the majority of people who seek climatic change ..
in constitutional lung disease, he had gone too late and was on his dying -
bed when the forces of Santa Anna fell upon the Alamo and robbed
the disease of its victim by foully murdering him and his gallant comrades.
And even long before Bowie's day this climatic Eldorado had attracted
the attention of the great Southwest, and thousands of frontiersmen had been,
drawn hither by the advantages it presented as a healthful country. But with
the gallant Bowie begins the history of the "Health Belt," now so justly cele- /
brated in almost every part of the civilized world.
