pallor, dulness, and analgesia of the mucous mem-
brane.
Therapeutic Applications.--Phenyl-formamid has
recently been employed for its anaesthetic properties in
laryngeal disease. As a haemostatic it has given satis-
factory results in painful affections like tonsillitis, phar-
yngitis, etc. This drug has been advantageously tried
as a general anaesthetic in surgical operations. As an
antirheurnatic and antipyretic it is claimed to be as effec-
tive as antipyrin or acetanilid.
Administration.-This remedy may be employed by
insufflation. For- subcutaneous injections I6 minims (I
cc.) of a 3 per cent. solution have produced the desired
anaesthetic effect.
Toxicology.-Formanilid is apt to cause a sensation
of depression and cardiac palpitations.
FUCHISINE.
The monokydrocklorate of rosaniline is known under
the names fucksine and roseine.
Therapeutic Applications.-This substance, soluble
in water, is said to be a valuable remedy in albuminuria
and in the treatment of typhus fever. Care must be
exercised in its use, as it is liable to contain arsenic.
Administration. Fuchsine is best given in pill form
with glycerin or tragacanth, in doses of from I to 4
grains (0.3 to 0.25 gramme).
GALEGA.
Therapeutic Applications.-Although not as yet
thoroughly studied chemically or physiologically, this
plant has been found to possess highly valuable galac-
tagogue properties. These virtues have been put to prac-
tical use with excellent results. An aqueous extract
is the preparation employed, in doses of from 79 to
15 grains (o.5 to I gramme). As high a quantity as 6o
grains (4 grammes) has been administered in the course
of a day.98
