An Expression of His Opinion on the
Present Situation. .
Liircour, Neb., July 20.--Mr. Bryan
today gave out the following inter-
view in regard to the situation in
G$|na: |f ||| & '■ * |
"Eveiy one déplorea the destruc-
tion of life in Obina and is horrified
at the barbarities practiced. ■* Every
one believe that it is the dijty of onr
government to protect the Uvea and
property of American oitiiens residing
in China, and I have ao doubt that
the administration will do so. I also
take it for granted that all American
cititans will withdraw from Obioa
temporarily or take refuge In some
seaport where they can be protected
by Amerioan ships until the excite-
ment ia over.
"If the Chinese government has
tried in good faith to proteot oar citi-
xens, suitable punishment of the
guilty and reparation and indemnity
for those who have suffered can doubt-
less be aeoared. If, apon investiga-
tion, it ia found that the Chinese gov-
ernment has not acted in good faith,
«ongreaa will have power to deal with
the matter, tfor several years Euro
pé a nationa have been threatening
to dismember China, and it is not
strange that their ambitiotis design*
should arouse | feeling of hostility
toward them. This feeling, however;
ought not to be directed against
American oitizen* and will not be if
our nation makes it known that it
bae no desire to grab land orto tres-
pase apon the righto of China. A
firm adherenoe to the Amerioan poli
cy of justice and fair dealing will not
only aet an example to other nations,
bat will give to our oltiséns residing
in China the best promise of security
"It would be better for our mer
chanto to have it known that they
seek trade only when trade ia advan-
tageous, and it will be better for our
missionaries to have it known that
they are preaching the gospel ot love
id not of fleets and armies."
