An Italian Mshlng boat bore me to
the island. All day we floated almost
idly dpott the bosom of a tranquil Sea.
The breeze that in the early morning
had geiiUy distended the light canvas
Jtt the qualht lateen sail died away,
...rig wafted us soaroe two leagues
)Oér the mainland, and tberé we lay
Iking in the hot sunshine though ft
is in D^oomber-^gaalng with placid
enjoyment upon soa'and sky and d la-
tent mountains and noting the ever*
changing wondrous tints that flitted
over each and all of these. Only the
laay blowing of a sleepy whale, the
splashing down ward-pi unge of a bask-
ing shark, affrighted by our vicinity,
.the flapping of the sail, broke now and
then the profound stillness. Then
before this had become in the
: slightest degree Irksome, a faint "BTutf'
line far, far away drew Itsolf aoross
the glassy wliltuuess of the ocean, and
at its. first breath the gentle bróezo
called forth a rippling answer from flits
bows of our little vessel, and away we
•ped toward the distant island.
High or grow the mountains as we
Approach them. Wonderfully beauti-
ful they are In the evening light. .And
now there is no longer sllenco. The
. roar of Ihu surges breaking against
the rooks, the howling and harking (of
t* hundreds of spa-lions, the screaming
of thousands of sea birds whose nests
honeycomb the face of the mighty

can see the lino oí whlio foam marking
the breakers, now note where centur-
ies of strife between sen ánd rook have
worn deep caverns in the latter, into
.which the billows rush with sullen
roar and hollow boomiug, to emerge
sgaiu In clouds of creamy foam and
glisten-ng spray ,
One cavern I explored, penetrating
ft least forty yards into the base of the
cliff. The entrance was somewhat
similar to that of the Blue grotto, the
interior much grander, though per-
haps less beautiful. The mighty vault
. overhead was supported by an timber
of pillars so cunningly wrought by na-
ture as to appear to have been fashion-
by the hand of man. Here, where
^the sun's direct rays wore exelnded
•nd the eyes consequently nudazzled by
their reflectiou from the water every
rock and shell, every bit of weed and
moss upon the bottom, themgh many
fathoms deep, was most distinctly
visible. Huge crawfish (the lobsters, of
the Pacific) crawled slowly about
through forests of Hftving seaweed
and over min ature submarine nionn-
ta ns in search of their muy. Fishes
Innumerable and literally of all the
odors of Hie rainbow darted hither and
thither among tlio rocks. It wits like

/ Casting the net one day under the
shadow of a huge overhanging cliff. Its
jneshos were plainly visible, suspended
ast above the bottom, and the whole

doubtless. In a momehit they were

A. Model Shopper.
It was;''at thelinings counter lit a
«Wrtála store, says The Botton Rec-
ord, and seven women were sea^-M
the ttqol's in front Of ibis' < unter buy-
ing linings. The patient t^fojiiwfcA.
listened .to their discussions and their
monolognea -answered their inquiries,
and patiently changed their orders to
suit their whims. Suddenly a blithe yet
quiet little lady i^ppeui ed with a b.t ol
gray ohoviot in her band. Oue of the
salesmen, who was waiting for a lady
in a black satin gdwn to determine
whether ahe would: have a yard and a
half or a yard and three quarters ol
percale, looked at the newcomer with
an expression of miugled inquiry and
and relief. He evidently recognised
her, and to have the pleasure of wait-
ing upon her. It must have been a plea-
sure to his soul, tired with the exas-
perating delay of the woman he was
sewtng....
"Pleáse gite me five yards of English
earn brio exactly two shades darker than
this cheviot," said the woman, who
know what she wanted, "and one yard
and soven-eighths of the second
4)tlality of silesia two shades lighter,
and a yard of hair cloth of the color of
the cambric. Piense lake this two-dollar
bill, and 1 will come baok for my ohange
and things after I have been to the but-
ton and trimmings counter"
I bad the ouriosity to follow her to
the trimmings counter. She asked for
her silk and twist, botton, braid, shields,
and whalebones iu the same quick,
exact manner,, and turiied around to
the buttons counter whllo they were
being done up. She asked' for the
card of sample buttons, picked .opt
those she wanted incredibly soon,
then retraced her steps, gathering up
her purohases as she went, taking a
parcel from the counter of cheviots afe
she passed, after going to.the linings
counter. Probably she hadn't time to
hiive things sent home, and .one can
easily Imagine that she had that dress
cut out and fitted and half finished bo
fore she went to sleep that night.
Revivals in Dakota.
A number of years ago, during the
grasshopper raids in Dakota and other
parts of the west, Eider Blodgett held
4 series of revival meetings in a small
place in the southeastern part of the
territory, whore the settlement then
«fas chiefly con fined. He had preach-
ed a powerful sermon, and had induo-
ed about two-thirds of the congrega-
tion to come forward and indicato their
desire to Unite with the church. Fear-
ing that some might not fully under-
stand the new duties the step would In-
volve, he began to explain what they
mn.<tt~not do in the future," '
"You must stop lyiii' an' ohentln' an'

"Elder, said a grizzled old fellow
who was kneeling In front of the pul-
pit, as he raised his head, "ye say we
mustn't swear no more?"
i "That's it—you musin't swear a
tali." j,
"Can't we cuss the 'hoppers?"
j "Na, sir."
"Well, that let's me out, t.henl'' and
he rose and started baok.
"Me, toot" put in a dozen others, as
they began to get up.
< "Hold on!"
shouted the elder, as the
fruits of his labor began to vanish,
