Administration rescinds MLK punishments

Special to The J-TAC
Tarleton State University Presi-
dent Dennis McCabe rescinded
sanctions against two students who
were involved in the MLK party
that put Tarleton in the national me-
dia spotlight.
In an interview with KTRL radio
j
earlier this month, Jeremy Pelz, the
student who posted photographs of
the party on social networking Web
site Facebook.com, said he received
a letter from McCabe stating the
Texas A&M legal counsel advised
Tarleton to' overturn the conduct
probation he received through fall
2008. He also haci been required to
attend an education program.
"J felt like 22 months was a
long time and didn't feel that it
was right," said Pelz, a-21-year-old,
management marketing and admin-
istrative systems major.
Another student who was also
placed on 22-months conduct pro-
bation, and who was additionally
required to write a paper about the
history of R&B music, also had his
sanctions rescinded in the March 1
letter from McCabe.
"On the advice of. the Texas
A&M University System, legal
counsel, I am rescinding the sanc-
tions assigned to you in the Feb. 20,
2007 letter from Assistant Dean of
Student Life, 'Ms. Dana Moore/' Mc-
Cabe wrote. "Specifically, no con-
duction probation will be assigned
and your participation in any edu-
cation program will be voluntary."
A copy of the letter was obtained
for this article. The student who re-
ceived the letter wished to remain
anonymous. It is not clear whether
these two students were the only
ones who had their punishment
overturned.
Much of the university's han-
dling of the students involved in the
incident has been covered in secrecy.
McCabe, Moore, Texas A&M Chan-
cellor Mike McKirmey oncl A&M
Board of Regents Chairman John
White were, all contacted for com-
ments about the punishments being
overturned. All declined comment.
McCabe said "that it is inappropri-
ate for the Tarleton State University
administration to make public state-
ments about any student, when it
involves his or her university edu-
cation records and that federal law
prohibits such disclosures."
The story began three months
ago when photographs of the Janu-
ary 15 party were posted on Face-
book. The Stephenville Empire-Tri-
bune broke the story, which spread
across the nation, after the Associat-
ed Press picked it up, CNN and oth-
er television networks interviewed
students and faculty on campus.
Tarleton held a forum, then a
"unity rally" to address issues raised
by the incident. University officials
announced unspecified sanctions
against some of the students who
