Woman of the Year
Don Williams brings
country music
toTSU
Don Williams, the laid-back
gentle Texan of country music,
will bring his show to the TSU
campus Mar.5, The show begins
at 8 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
Williams has the distinction of
being selected Male Vocalist of
the Year by the Country Music
Association both in the United
States and in Great Britain.
Often described as the "gentle
giant," Williams has said
frequently, "I just want my work
to stand for me. I! the music isn't
there, then my personal behavior
or my image won't help too
much."
Williams was born in the small
Texas community of Floydada
and grew up in Portland on the
Texas coast. After a stint in the
Army, he returned to Corpus
Christi in 1964 and formed the
popular Pozo Seco Singers, a folk,
pop and country trio.
The group split up in 1971, and
Williams went to Nashville,
where he began writing songs,
Unable to get his songs recorded,
Williams turned to the studios
himself and did a demo tape
which eventually became his first
album, "Don Williams Volume
One." In rapid order, 10 ad-
ditional albums were produced
and Williams was (Hi his way to
stardom. From these efforts
have come 12 singles that went to
No. 1 on the charts and "Tulsa
Time" which won the "1979 Song
of the Year" honor from the
Academy of Country Music.
Tickets will be $5 advance
purchase and $6 at the door.
Tarleton students with SAF cards
will be admitted free. Contact
the Stephenville Chamber of
Commerce office and the
Tarleton business office for
tickets.
TSU faculty promoted
Natrelle Young, an assistant
professor in the English
department at TSU, was named
Stephenville Woman of the Year
last Thursday night at a banquet
at the Tejas Country Club. Mrs.
Young is a graduate of Walnut
Spring High School, received a
B.A. from TSU and an M.A. from
Sul Ross State University.
Several other TSU women were
also nominated. Mrs. Young was
nominated for her work on (he
literary journal "Vanderbilt
Review of Prose and Poetry."
Mrs. Young said she was "very
surprised and honored" to win
the award, 3nd was "flattered
just to be nominated."
Lavinia Lohrmann was
mistress of ceremonies at the
banquet sponsored by seven
Stephenville women's
organizations. Guest speaker at
the banquet was Jane Hickie, an
attorney from Austin.

Other nominees for the award
were Christine Bonds, assistant
professor of nursing at TSU; Jan
Lowrey, Tex Ann basketball
coach; Mary McCoy, county
judge; Mary Jane Mingus, TSU
drama and speech professor;
Christian Rosner, head of the
TSU music department; and
June Shannon, retired
Stephenville English teacher.
The promotion of six TSU
faculty members and granting of
tenure to three others was ap-
proved by members of the board
of regents of the Texas A&M
University System meeting Feb.6
at College Station.

Agriculture, Dr. Michael R.
Wade was promoted from
assistant professor to associate
professor. In the Department of
English and Languages, Dr.
Mary Jane Mingus was promoted
from assistant professor to
associate professor and Dr. B.J.
Alexander was promoted from
associate professor to professor.
In the Department of
Mathematics, Dr. Timothy L.
Flinn was promoted from
assistant professor to associate
professor.
In the Department of Physical
Sciences, Dr. Rueben H, Walter
was promoted from assistant
professor to associate professor.
In the Department of Home
Economics, Dr. Dolly I. Thiem
was promoted from acting
professor and acting head of the
department to assistant
professor and department head.
Academic tenure was approved
for Christine Bonds, assistant
professor of biological sciences;
Kenneth D. Collins, assistant
professor of business ad-
ministration; and Dr. Rueben
Walter.
