VD on decrease in
Although Fort Worth and
Dallas face an epidemic of
venereal disease. Erath County
has shown a considerable
decrease since 1977, statistics
show.
Forty-two cases of gonorrhea
and one case of syphilis were
reported to the Health Clinic in
Fort Worth for Erath county in
1977, said Charles Terry, VD
program manager for Fort
Worth.
Since then, only 40 cases of
gonorrhea and one case of
syphilis have been, reported here.
Over 27,700 cases of gonorrhea
were reported in the Fort Worth
and Dallas area.
Herpes 2, a virus of the nerve
cells associated with fever
blisters, is not a required
reportable disease but already
3-4 cases have been reported in
Stephenville, said Jan Sparks,
clinic aid at the Family Planning
Center.
Herpes 2 is the fastest
growing veneral disease in the
country and is thirteen percent
of all VD cases. There are
300,000 new cases of herpes 2
nationwide.
Herpes simplex virus hominis
is the virus responsible for
genital herpes or herpes 2. It
should not be confused with
herpes 1 - oral infections.
Herpes 2 is incurable. In
addition, its long-term effects
are still unknown. But
information regarding its
symptoms, transmission, and
prevention is available and
should not be overlooked.
Women and men suffer the
same symptoms. A burning or
tingling in the genital area will
result 3-7 days after the
infection sets in. Raised sore or
fluid-filled blisters that resolve
or rupture to form shallow,
painful sores which scab then
heal are characteristics of herpes
2. Other symptoms may include
swelling of the lymph nodes
(glands) or a sick feeling. The
initial infection lasts 14-28 days.
Fever, sunlight, menustration,
and emotional stress can
stimujate the recurrences and
multiplication of the sores.
These recurrent infections last
7-14 days. During the dormant
period, herpes 2 is least likely to
be transmitted.
Transmission occurs through
sexual contact or direct contact
with the infected area in which

Iranian students enrolled at
TSU apparently don't need to
worry about having their visas
revoked because of a break in
#
diplomatic relations between
America and Iran.
Since November 19 Iranians
have been deported, while
another 1400 have left the U.S.
voluntarily.
According to Dr. Walker
dean of graduate studies, the
number of inquiries from
Iranians wishing to attend TSU
have not decreased. Some
Iranian students left between
semesters, either going home or
to other universities
"The Iranian students here
are careful considerate, decent
people. Generally they have
made favorable impressions,
even though their government at
home does astonishing things to
us," he said.
"The Iranian students here
haven't taken any hostages.
Almost none of the Iranian
students were at home at the
time of the revolution. They are
tense because they don't know
what is going to happen and
they are worried about their
families.
"I sometimes worry that we
will take out our anger against
Iran on them. They are innocent
and should not be confused with
the militant students in Tehran"
he added.

The members of the band are
all from Texas, and play
primarily in the Austin area.
However, they don't have the
total "Austin Sound" which has
been the trademark of several
bands from that area.
Too Smooth plays regularly
at the Armadillo World
Headquarters in Austin, but
recently have moved into the
Dallas area and onto the club
and university circuit.
They started their careers in
the rock field playing backup for
such groups as Spirit, Ted

Quicksilver Messenger.,

Herpes 2 cannot be
accurately diagnosed by a blood

reliable method used in
diagnosing the genital infection.

Clinic provides services
for students, residents
Help is available to VD victims at the' Stephenville Family
Planning Clinic.
Women can go to the clinic and have tests made there. The clinic
sends the tests to the Fort Worth Health Department for analysis,
and the health department returns the results to the clinic.
The clinic refers men directly to the health department. Since
some veneral diseases develop very rapidly in men, the condition can
worsen by the time the clinic obtains the results from the health
department.
Other functions of the Clinic include physical examinations and
pap smears. Dr. Jasbir, a gynecologist at the Stephenville Hospital,
makes the exams.
The clinic also offers blood tests, pregnancy tests, and counseling
on birth control and sterilization.
The clinic offers all of its services free. It serves only those
patients who qualify under certain economic guidelines. The
guidelines vary, but most students would qualify, said Jan Sparks, a
clinic aid. She added that over half of the Clinic's patients are college
students.
The clinic makes birth' control devices available to qualified
patients, said Ms. Sparks. Birth control pills, as well as other forms
of birth'; control, are available free to women, and condoms are
available free to men.
All of the clinic's services are confidential. The clinic is located at
111 W. Frey.
