It Meant Osath According to an An*
clentt Superstition.
a curious superstition has caused—
or at any rate accelerated—the death
of Mrs. Ueliamy, the wlfo of a Hunt-
ingdonshire t*.a farmer, living at Ram-
sey, says the Manchester Chronicle.
Hearing In the stllluesB of the night
rapplngs in an old family deed box,
the woman, wjho had been (lightly In-
disposed for a day or two, was terror-
stricken, as her mother-in-law had
said that when a "knocking" cams
from the box a death In the house
followed. She aroused her hutband,
crying, "It's knocked! You know
that's the Warning!" The farmer says
that he tben heard tapping in the box
and states: UI knew what it meant;
my wife was to be taken from me!"
Adding: "The message which the box
gave brought such a dread on my
Wife that she took to her bed and
gradually pined away." Asked if he
thought the rapping brought about
her end, he replied: "There Is no
doubt about It," and they were beard,
he said, wh«n his father died. Now
It turns out that the rapplngs were
made by the common wood-boring In-
sect known as the death watch beetle
—a name It derives from the supersti-
tion attaching to it—which is to be
found In old houses and ancient furni-
ture. It taps with its bead against
the wood In signalling to Its mate,
and the sharp souud it makes in the
silence of the night has none of the
significance with which superstition
has surrounded it.

Irishmen Claim to Have Seen the
| "Little People."
Here la a modern fairy story from
Ireland: "One day about 20 yeara
ago," writes a correspondent, " I wan
fishing from a boat on Lough Dorg. i
inquired of my boatmen if they had
ever seen fairies. At fi.'it, fearing to
be laughed at, they scouted the idea,
but one of them told the following:
On a Sunday he was returning after
mass, and stood with a friend, named
Sullivan, on the bridge of Ktllaloe.
Looking toward a potato field on tho
slope of the rising ground to the east
of the town, a field which he was able
to point out from the boat, he saw
issuing from the liss a troop of 'little
iieople,' one being distinctly taller
than the rest. At first they seemed
rather blurred, then took distinct
shapes and began to play the nation-
al game of hurley among the bare po-
tato rigs. He called Sullivan's atten-
iton to them, but for some time bis
friend could not see them, then said
he could, and they watched the game
together for a time. Then the Kim
went in. and the fairies, moving to-
ward the liss, as if returning to it,
vanished. Liases are rough pieces,
sometimes hillocks, sometimes de-
pressions, often busby, hut never cul-
tivated. 1 have been told they are
left as doorways for the fairies when
visiting the earth's surface."

STONE WORTH MUCH MONEY.
Invalur.blo Trear.u-e in Possession of
the British Museum.
There is a slab of black stone in the
British museum which, if you could
walk away with it and establish your
cliiim as the owner, you could sell any
day for a quarter of a million, and
llnd half a dozen n.ionoy kings in Eng-
land and America ready to l$uy it.
There is nothing very striking about
this stone; it might be a piece of black
marble with jEome peculiar hieroglyph-
ics upon it- But, it is Just these hiero-
glyphics which make it so valuable,
because they are the key to ail the an-
cicnt writings of'the Egyptians, and
without this stone, called the Ros-
etta Stone, we should be unable to
read the Egyptian writings which
have been discovered from time to
time. Some French tourists found the
Rosetta Stone In Egypt, and trans-
ported it to Paris, where an English-
man took a fancy to it for a garden
oi naiu"i}t Ho paid $25 for it,—five
sovereigns,-s-yl got a treasure which
.vcu con!/.! ever wJ,tJ5 gold, and vet
not represent Its value, but till the
day of his death he did not know
what that bit of stone was worth.

Emperor 8olved Difficulty.
Frederic Villiers tolls this story of
the German emperor: The occasion
was the marriage of the crown prince
of Roumanla to Princess Marie, the
handsome eldest daughter of the late
duke of Saxe-Coburg. After the func-
tion the German emperor waa tka
first to give the bridal fcisB. He was
In full English naval uniform, smoth-
ered with (jV>coratlon^§ and the bride
was dressed In a costume which could
not bear much crushing. The kaiser,
one could see, was trying to avoid this
trouble and the birde was afraid, In
turn, to disarrange his mass of decora-
tions. in a moment the emperor was
seized with one of bis brilliant Ideas.
He took the pretty blushing bride by
the right elbow, Ulted her a little to-
ward him, launched himself forward
and, bending over her, iiupiln'ed the
kiss.
