THE TEXAS ALMANAC. 191
large number of very small stationary
and portable mills which operate irregu-
larly. It is estimated that there is a total
of about 900 mills of all sizes in Texas.
Most of these saw pine, but there are a
number of hardwood mills, one or two
very large ones being located near Beau-
mont. There is also an appreciable manu-
facturing industry in Texas depending
upon the raw lumber, including planing
mills, and manufacture of furniture and
fixtures, packing boxes, baskets and bar-
rels. (See "Lumber," "Boxes," "Baskets"
and "Cooperage" in table on "Texas
Manufactures by Industries.")

The figures above represent only the lumber pro-
