These two Kiowa boys were photographed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, c. 1895 by H. P.
Robinson, who advertised himself as a photographer of "Indian Views." Wilbur Sturtevant
Nye's Carbine & Lance: The Story of Old Fort Sill (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press,
1937, 1942, 1969) is based on interviews with the last surviving Indian warriors from the
Southern Plains frontier, and has served as a foundation for virtually all subsequent
research on the Southern Plains tribes. R. Michael Patterson's article about Nye begins on
