Richard King (1824-1885) and Mifflin Kenedy (1818-1895), ca. 1854. As principal part-
ners in the shipping and livestock firms of M. Kenedy & Company, R. King & Company,
and Kenedy, Stillman & King, these two entrepreneurs entered into numerous contracts
with the Confederate government to supply European buyers with cotton; in return, their
firms supplied the Confederates with beef, horses, mules, imported munitions, medical
