Affairs of the Association
RON TYLER
We have received a lot of good news this year, beginning with the fact
that we have matched the National Endowment for the Humanities chal-
lenge grant of $350,000 for The Handbook of Texas and are, therefore, as-
sured of receiving the full amount of the grant. Also, last October we
received two prestigious awards from the Western History Association
for articles in the Southwestern Historical Quarterly: the 1992 Ray Allen
Billington Award (prizes of $300 for the author and $100oo for the jour-
nal) for the best article related to Western History for F. Todd Smith,
"The Kadohadacho Indians and the Louisiana-Texas Frontier,
1803-1815" (October, 1991); and the Bolton-Kinnaird Award in Bor-
derlands History ($300 for the author) for Sam D. Ratcliffe, "'Escenas
de Martirio': Notes on The Destruction of Mission San Sabd" (April, 1991).
We also learned that War Scare on the Rio Grande: Robert Runyon's Pho-
tographs of the Border Conflict, 1913-1916, by Frank N. Samponaro and
PaulJ. Vanderwood, received honorable mention in the 1992 Carl Hert-
zog book design competition at the University of Texas at El Paso, the
only trade publication to receive such a mention.
MEMBERSHIP
Sometime last year there apparently was a mixup in subscriptions by
one of the major subscription services, and it appeared that a number of
university and college libraries had dropped their subscriptions to the
Southwestern Historical Quarterly. While we knew that many libraries were
being forced to cut back, we contacted the services to see if some kind of
error had been made. We have made some progress in getting the li-
braries back on our subscription list, but have lost a few members over-
all. As you can see from the following figures, the "Subscription
Agencies" figure, which represents most of the library subscriptions, is a
respectable 412, but that is down from 440 last year at this time.
