would soon rival Brooklyn as a shipping center. But the 1915 hurricane de-
stroyed the port, the railroad, and many of the resort hotels along the beach.
The discovery of oil at High Island in the 1930s again brought rough outsiders
onto the peninsula and forced the locals to build a jail out of oilfield junk to
house the rowdies.
A felicitous writing style and rarely seen family photographs of Bolivar's peo-
ple and buildings before and after the 19oo and 1915 storms enhance the book.
The author, a descendant of Charles Taylor Cade, a cattleman and owner of the
1897 Sea View Hotel at High Island, cleverly incorporates direct quotations to
enliven an already excellent narrative. Scholarly footnotes and a good index
make this a valuable source for historians as well as entertaining reading.
