T WENTY MONTHS AGO, IN NOVEMBER 1991, I CALLED GEORGE WARD,
managing editor of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, from Baylor
University to complain that no checklist of Texas history thesis titles had
been gathered and published since the 197os. He replied that the Quar-
terly had failed to find anyone to do the work. Would I like to undertake
it? He wanted not just Texas history, but also studies of all Texas sub-
jects, in fact all masters or doctoral theses using Texas data in all fields
of study for seventeen years, from the beginning of 1975 until the end
of 1991. When it appeared in print, the checklist would be the fifth to
be published under the direction of the Texas State Historical Associa-
tion.
His request came at a convenient time; I was then creating a multi-
disciplinary bibliography of the Brazos River Basin, and had found too
few theses. Thinking to kill two birds with one stone, I agreed to search

ographer of the work of former TSHA president Roger N. Conger. She holds a B.A. degree from
the University of North Texas and an M.A. from Texas Tech University She also studied at La
Universidid Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
Robert L. Klatte received his B.A and M.A. degrees in history from Baylor University. He is
currently employed by the athletic department at the University of Cincinnati. Kristin Hopkins
holds the B.S.E degree from Baylor, where she is a graduate student in history. She taught in
Austin during the 1992-93 school year. Kelly McMichael Stott has a B.A. degree in history from
Texas A&M University and is a graduate student in American studies at Baylor.
