Chiricahua-Fort Sill Apache artist Allan Houser, a descendant of Geronimo,
based this and other paintings of Apache life on oral history. Manuel Merino's
circa 1804 report on Apaches commented on a similar dance captured in
Houser's painting almost 15o years later: "... two or three of the most fleet,
agile, and talented men . . . perform a type of dance pantomime of great vio-
lence, with very difficult movements of limbs and joints ... The dancers cover
their heads with a type of chamois mask .. "
