Southwestern Historical Quarterly
carry special design features, such as decorative type and patriotic sym-
bols, to help transmit their message and achieve their purpose.
Each imprint possesses a special quality and vitality-the cotillion in-
vitation, with its promise of an evening of elegance; the medical broad-
side advertising a cure for bilious fever; and the railroad stock cer-
tificate, whose decorative type and woodcuts suggest early printing
achievement. Though designed for the moment, these imprints endure
as rich sources of information, as tangible evidence of a diverse culture,
as artifacts of early printers, and as images of strong visual appeal
whose content, style, rhetoric, use of symbols, and artistry reveal some-
thing of the texture of life in the Republic.
The selections in this portfolio are drawn from the collections of the
Eugene C. Barker Texas History Center at the University of Texas at
Austin. All are rare imprints; a few are the only copies known to still
exist. These images and words from the time of the Republic have
stories to tell; each is a small key to a larger understanding. We invite
you to view, through them, another Texas, a Republic founded 150
years ago that we must know if we are to understand the Texas of today.
This leaflet announcing Stephen F. Austin's death and plans for his body's inter-
ment was issued by the office of the Telegraph and Texas Register, then located in
Columbia, Texas. The black-bordered notice suggests the popular view of Aus-
tin as the "Father of Texas" by its reference to the loss of the "Patriarch" and the
"tenderest of fathers."
