Meetings
The Association's ninety-first annual meeting will be held in Gal-
veston, March 5-7, 1987, at the San Luis Hotel. The hotel sits near the
beach, and every room has a private terrace overlooking the Gulf of
Mexico. It is hard to imagine a more pleasant setting to get together
with friends and talk Texas history. Come listen to the sessions, bid on a
book or map in the Texana auction, and take a stroll on the Strand, with
its Victorian architecture and fine restaurants and shops. The Associa-
tion's annual meeting is a place where anyone interested in the history
of our state is welcome to join us for three days of stimulating presenta-
tions and good companionship. We look forward to seeing you this
coming March in Galveston.
Accessions
V. W. (Val) Lehmann of Kingsville, noted Texas biologist and wildlife
manager, has donated his professional archives to the Barker Texas
History Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Lehmann was wild-
life manager for the King Ranch in South Texas from 1945 to 1972,
and is an authority on bobwhite quail, Attwater's prairie chicken, and
sheep of the Rio Grande plain of Texas. As King Ranch wildlife mana-
ger he was engaged in wildlife ecology, habitat management, hunter
regulation, and predator control on more than one million acres. Mate-
rials in Lehmann's collection measure 608 linear feet, twice the length
of a football field.
The Lehmann archives cover the period 1930 to 1975. Prior to his
employment at the King Ranch, Lehmann was a regional manager for
the Texas Game, Fish and Oyster Commission and was a field biologist
for the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. After retiring from
the King Ranch in 1972, he spent nine years as a consultant to the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, the Texas Land Office, and private individu-
als. Since 1981 he has been a visiting scientist at the Caesar Kleberg
Wildlife Research Institute of Texas A&I University. Lehmann's collec-
tion is a rich source of information on Texas' plants and wildlife. Its
contents include histories of wildlife distribution in Texas; Texas Parks188
