When Texas seceded from the Union in February, 1861, and joined the Con-
federate States of America, the Stars and Stripes of the United States was re-
placed with the Lone Star Flag until the Confederacy adopted a national flag.
Known as the Stars and Bars, the first national flag of the new southern nation
was raised on March 4, 1861. The flag on the cover is simply the Stars and Bars
with the addition of a distinctive Texas shield. It was carried by an unidentified
Texas Confederate unit during the Civil War.
To observe Texas's 15oth anniversary of independence, this issue of the
Southwestern Historical Quarterly focuses on Texas during the years 1820-1846.
This cover is the fifth in a series that features historic flags associated with
Texas.
