Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
ANNUAL MEETING
For the first time in its long history, the Association held its annual
meeting in Houston. More than 8oo people, the largest number ever,
attended the eighty-seventh annual meeting. The highlights of the
meeting were the reception at the San Jacinto Museum given by the
San Jacinto Museum of History Association and Texas Commerce
Bancshares honoring Ambassador Clark, and the Friday luncheon, at-
tended by over 6oo persons, when author James A. Michener ad-
dressed the members.
The Program Committee (J. C. Martin, chairman; B. Byron Price;
Peggy B. Hildreth; Randolph B. Campbell; Nancy B. Parker; and
Sharon R. Crutchfield) brought together a fine selection of sessions, in-
cluding nine joint sessions held with other organizations. The total
of twenty-two sessions provided a wide array of topics in the field of
Texas studies. The local-arrangements committee (T. L. Wilson, chair-
man; J. C. Martin; William C. Griggs; Patrick H. Butler; Louis J.
Marchiafava; and Nancy B. Parker) provided excellent tours to the
Bayou Bend Museum, the Houston Metropolitan Research Center,
the Woodson Research Center at Rice University, Sam Houston Park,
and the San Jacinto Monument via the Sam Houston yacht.
At the business meeting on Friday afternoon members named Am-
bassador Edward A. Clark, president; Clifton Caldwell, first vice-
president; and Archie P. McDonald, second vice-president. Alwyn
Barr and Lewis L. Gould were elected to the Executive Council.
Ben H. Procter (chairman), James W. Pohl, Max S. Lale, Nancy N.
Barker, and Fred H. Moore constituted the Nominations Committee.
THE HANDBOOK OF TEXAS
During the past year thirty-nine scholars accepted three-year ap-
pointments to the Handbook's editorial advisory board. Their work as
advisory editors will reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the project
and our effort to have leading scholars advise us in various fields that
will be included in the revision.
