A Checklist of Theses and Dissertations in
Texas Studies, 1964-1974
Compiled and Edited by L. TUFFLY ELLIS and BARBARA J. STOCKLEY
IN 1955 THE ASSOCIATION PUBLISHED TWO CHECKLISTS OF THESES AND
dissertations relating to Texas history. Texas History Theses, compiled
and edited by H. Bailey Carroll and Milton R. Gutsch, lists works com-
pleted at the University of Texas for the years 1893-1951. The second
publication, Claude Elliott's Theses on Texas History, comprises a check-
list of works completed at eighteen other Texas graduate schools and thirty-
three universities and colleges from outside the state. These two volumes
proved invaluable to scholars working in the field of Texas studies and to
graduate students considering Texas topics for their own theses.
Since the publication of these two helpful works, graduate students have
completed scores of additional theses and dissertations. In the mid-sixties
the Association solicited from graduate schools throughout the country titles
of theses and dissertations finished between 1952 and May, 1964. Although
the lists were not complete, the Quarterly published the results in the
Texas Collection in various issues of Volumes LXIX and LXX and in the
Southwestern Collection in Volume LXXI.
In the fall 1973 and spring 1974 the Association asked all graduate
schools in the country for titles of theses and dissertations relating to Texas
completed or to be completed between May, 1964 and May, 1974. Many
responded. Some, whose lists had been unavailable or incomplete in the
mid-I96os, took the opportunity to bring the older lists up to date (causing
some overlap in the dates of coverage). The checklist is not restricted to
history, but includes works about any aspect of Texas, regardless of the
field of study. Beginning with this issue the Quarterly will publish the feed-
back from the cooperating graduate deans and college and university
libraries. The checklist commences with the Texas graduate schools, and
the listing is in alphabetical order by schools and by students from the
respective institutions.
