Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
In cooperation with the Department of History, the University of Texas
at Austin, the Association sponsored a two-week summer course of Texas
studies. Called the Institute of Texas Studies, the content-emphasis pro-
gram provided history and social studies teachers an interdisciplinary ap-
proach to the study and teaching of the Texas experience. Sixteen scholars
representing nine institutions lectured on the geography, anthropology, his-
tory, architecture, music, art, and crafts of Texas for the era running from
prehistoric times to I865. Forty-seven junior and senior high school and
community college teachers attended the six-hour graduate studies program.
QUARTERLY
During the past year most of the problems in connection with the publi-
cation of the Quarterly have worked themselves out. The new typesetters
and printers have worked diligently to accommodate us.
The H. Bailey Carroll Award of $200 for the best article in Volume
LXXVII went to Ronnie C. Tyler for his article, "The Mexican War: A
Lithographic Record," in the July issue. Tyler is curator of history at the
Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, Fort Worth. He recently returned
to Texas after a six-month stay in Europe with an exhibition of western
Americana from the Amon Carter Museum.
The Quarterly's editorial advisory board-Felix D. Almaraz, Jr.; Lewis
L. Gould; Marilyn McAdams Sibley; and Ronnie C. Tyler-and a number
of other historians during the past year kindly read many manuscripts sub-
mitted to us for consideration for publication. Their critiques of these papers
assisted us greatly in our decisions. We appreciated also the work of Robert
A. Calvert, book review editor. Calvert spent the spring as visiting profes-
sor here at UT, Austin, and will be back in Austin with us for the I974-
1975 academic year.
Quarterly staffers Barbara J. Stockley and Mary M. Standifer continue
their invaluable services. Highly capable and professional in their work,
each carries a heavy responsibility.
