Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
In early April, Von Boeckmann-Jones Company, printers of the Quarterly
since 1897, went out of the printing business. The development came as a
complete surprise to the Association's staff, as we had long taken our friends
at the i i th Street plant for granted. After some delays Von Boeckmann-
Jones arranged for Steck-Warlick Company to print the April issue. Between
jobs the latter company managed to squeeze in our work.
In the meantime we started receiving bids from various high-quality
printers throughout the state. In mid-June we awarded the contract to
Capital Printing Company here in Austin. Capital printed the French Le-
gation in Texas for us and is a fine firm. Their typesetters had to acquire
the type face-Baskerville-that we use for the Quarterly. All of the
changes and adjustments have thrown us off schedule. The problem has
been compounded by the complexities of this issue, with its many colored
ilustrations. We hope to be back to our regular publication dates beginning
with the January issue.
The H. Bailey Carroll Award of $200 for the best article in Volume
LXXVI went to Professor Nancy N. Barker, University of Texas, Austin, for
her article in the July 1972 issue, "From Texas to Mexico: An Affairiste
at Work."
While we are on the subject of the Quarterly, we want to express our
thanks to our editorial advisory board, F6lix D. Almariz, Jr.; Lewis L.
Gould; Marilyn McAdams Sibley; and Ronnie C. Tyler, and to the many
other readers of manuscripts submitted during the past year for us to con-
sider for publication. The critiques of the readers have been very helpful to
us. We also appreciate the work of Robert A. Calvert, book review editor,
for maintaining the high quality of our review section.
Assistant editor Barbara Stockley deserves special mention for her careful
attention to detail and for her constructive suggestions. Theresa Jamail
Sewell and Mary Standifer, editorial assistants, carefully checked quotations,
footnote citations, and a host of other details of the articles published. Their
efforts contributed to a more accurate publication.162
