Book Reviews
The compilers, who are citizens of Chappell Hill, have made a worthy
contribution to local history. They would have been justified in billing
themselves as authors.

Guillermo Prieto. By Malcolm D. McLean. (Fort Worth: Texas Christian
University Press, 1968. Pp. vii+399. Index. $1o.oo.)
Guillermo Prieto was one of the leading poet-intellectuals of nineteenth-
century Mexico, and a major figure in the Reforma. Therefore, McLean's
bibliography is heartily welcome, and this reviewer hopes it will be
followed by a biography-perhaps an American release of the author's
own study.
The bibliography is divided into two parts (though part one is not
identified as such). The first section, in addition to the usual biblio-
graphical data and notes, provides the location of the work. Section
two lists works on Prieto in a similar fashion. Part one is arranged
chronologically; part two is alphabetical.
The major weakness is the lack of a table of contents which would
have been helpful in locating the parts and their several subsections.
Finally, since each bibliographic entry is numbered, why does the index
refer to page numbers?

Early Texas Birth Records, 1838-z878. By Alice Duggan Gracy, Jane
Sumner, and Emma Gene Seale Gentry. (Austin: n.p., 1,969. Pp. 99.
Maps. $6.00.)
This slender volume is a compilation of early birth registrations in
twenty-five central Texas counties, generally covering the period from
1873 to 187-6. Earlier dates appear as parents, registering a child born
in one of these years, listed previous children; later dates are found
as many counties continued to record births after the law of 1873 re-
quiring them to do so was repealed in 1876. The combined county listings
are alphabetized by the parent's surname; additional information includes
the county of record, the child's name, and the birth date.
The expressed purpose of the authors is to make apparently little-
known information available to genealogists, and it is genealogists who
will find the book most valuable. Historians, demographers, and laymen
interested in research in the specified time-period and locality should
also find the compilation useful. It is the kind of reference that should
be available in local libraries and historical society holdings, as it brings
together records previously found only in scattered county seats. Copies
