coast who have just come together. This Mission, Your Excellence, is one
that can succeed, because of the opportunities its lands afford.
To plan, as the Reverend Fathers Commissary" and Garza have planned,
to found and establish another Mission in the interior and away from
the coast is like wanting to reach the stars with one's hand, since in all
the coast land only the Angels will be able to live and the Indians who
were born there. They survive only by moving from place to place
throughout the year and mostly along the shoreline, because the plagues
are intolerable and the winds bring fever and cause scurvy or the sickness
of Holland.
This was the reason for withdrawing the Presidio and Mission in those
days to the place where they are now; still they were not so far from
the coast [as this new Mission would be]. The deceased Fr. Juan Cam-
beros, who founded the Mission the first time, saw clearly that the
Mission could not be founded far from the coast, since there was no
wood nor fresh water there, nor could cattle and horses be raised and
kept, because of lack of pasture. The Indians have water only from a
few small wells, which they dig close to the shores of the lakes. Many
other reasons I could give Your Excellency but I omit them now lest
Your Excellency become fatigued. But I shall not omit to ask incessantly
in my poor prayers the Almighty to preserve the precious life of Your
Excellency through many years for the good of this Mission and of all
these kingdoms.
College of Guadalupe, June 30, 1791. Your most devoted and humble
Chaplain kisses the feet of Your Excellency.
Fr. Josh Mariano Reyes.
His Most Excellent Lord Viceroy,
Governor and Captain General, Count
of Revilla Gigedo.
52Father Manuel de Silva was the commissary and prefect of the mission. See note 17,
