The school at the Comanche Reserve continued to make
progress until hostile conditions reached a crisis in March, 1859.
Leeper stated:
The cloth house which I prepared is entirely destroyed by the
wind and the Indians are restless and apprehensive of an injurious
change in their affairs on account of the troubled state of the country,
therefore, I deem it most prudent to close the school until such
time as permanent arrangements can be made for the purpose.
Agent Leeper added. "Whilst upon the subject permit me to say
that Mr. Sloan, the teacher, is entitled to the thanks of those
interested for the untiring industry and zeal with which he man-
aged and conducted the school.""
